Monica Higgins
Public relations Account Director who took Management Essentials to augment her management knowledge with a practical, case-based approach.
Why did you decide to sign up for Management Essentials?
In my opinion, so many management skills are learned on the job, through experience, so I was curious to learn from the case study method, and to be given the opportunity to examine how similar situations have played out in my own professional experiences.
What was your favorite part of the program?
Not surprisingly, the case studies were my favorite part of the course. Being able to break down real-life scenarios, and look at the management processes within each—what worked and what didn't—provided a unique method of learning, and incomparable to other course offerings available. The reflections throughout each module forced me to look back at my own career with a different perspective, and taught me through self-analysis, rather than memorizing steps and ideologies.
How are you applying the skills you've learned in Management Essentials?
I'm more aware of looking at things through a larger lens, from a variety of perspectives. I've always been a fan of asking thoughtful, learning questions as opposed to making declarations, and I'm now a big fan of playing devil's advocate.
Any advice for people who will be taking Management Essentials?
I would advise not worrying too much about taking notes on the little things, and instead recommend moving through the course at a natural pace, not disrupting the flow of the course content.
