Kyle Rosenmeyer

Where are you working?

I work as an Engineer in Public Works for the City of Boise. Since starting my engineering career in 2007, I've had the opportunity to be involved with roads, bridges, sewer systems, and building construction. To date, I am most proud of the opportunity I had to oversee the design of 30 new miles of sewer lines in the City of Boise. Infrastructure for basic services is critical to a city’s growth and, because of my work in the city, I feel strongly connected to its growth.

Why did you decide to sign up for CORe?

Once I was working for a few years, I realized that many careers end up requiring a business skill set. Engineering is a great example. If an engineer graduating from college ascends from an entry-level position to CEO, they transition with each promotion to use less of the technical engineering skills and more business skills. Once I realized how prevalent this is in many industries, I knew I had to start building my business skill set as soon as possible. To me, CORe represented a good foundation in business concepts at a fraction of the price and time required to complete an MBA. Perfect for a working professional.

What was your favorite part of the program?

Harvard's use of case studies is well documented, and I knew I would get to see a lot of real-world examples if I enrolled in CORe. For me, that connection from textbook to reality made the courses memorable, enjoyable, and interesting. Case studies were absolutely my favorite part of the program.

How are you applying the skills you've learned in CORe?

I feel fortunate to have opportunities to apply CORe concepts right away. I manage construction projects for the City of Boise that require frequent communication and interaction with the City's financial team to set budgets and track expenses. My ability to understand and problem solve with my accounting counterparts has increased, and I think they see that too. I also attended the CORe program in the midst of turning my photography hobby into a side business, and, to say the least, I have gained a level of confidence in taking on that goal that I would not have had otherwise.

Any advice for people who will be taking CORe?

Take the time commitment seriously and remember that your time on the course platform is valuable, so enjoy every minute of it. Also, CORe is fun, don't let it stress you out!
