Amy Wallens Green
Senior Manager at WGBH Educational Foundation
Why did you decide to sign up for Negotiation Mastery?
I've never taken any official coursework in negotiation. I was drawn to learning to master a skill that would help me in both my personal and professional life.
What was your favorite part of the program?
I really enjoyed the virtual classroom environment. Dr. Wheeler and the faculty imparted great wisdom in relation to the case studies we were reviewing. And hearing from experts in their field proved insightful.
How are you applying the skills you've learned in Negotiation Mastery?
I apply BATNA (Best Alternative to a Negotiated Agreement) and ZOPA (Zone of Possible Agreement) to every situation I approach where there is a possibility of a negotiated outcome. The coursework increased my confidence and highlighted where I was already very strong.Any advice for people who will be taking Negotiation Mastery?
Be prepared to question every negotiation you ever lead. Moving forward, the outcome will be more favorable because you are armed with better tools. You may also surprise yourself if you possess some degree of the skills mastered in the course. Why do you think it’s important to continue your education and keep learning?
In order to maintain relevance in the workplace and general engagement in life, it is important to keep learning.
What’s the best piece of advice you have ever received?
Someone once told me to lower my expectations of other people. I hated to hear it but it was good advice. I hold myself to a very high standard and I'm very proud of that. However, holding others to my standards largely results in disappointment and unrealistic expectations that never get met. The best possible outcomes result from negotiation and compromise.
