More than a decade ago, Marcela Paim made a decision that changed her career trajectory.
As a trained physiotherapist in Brazil, she built a life many would consider successful—professional credentials, job security, and a clear path forward. Yet, she found herself drawn toward something different.
So she started over.
Leaving health care behind, Paim stepped into entrepreneurship without a formal marketing background, but with a determination to build something of her own. What began as a practical need to promote her business quickly became a fascination with how brands grow, earn trust, and create lasting value.
Over time, that curiosity evolved into expertise—and eventually led her to Harvard Business School Online's Digital Marketing Strategy course.
From Health Care to Marketing
Paim spent the years after leaving physiotherapy building her marketing knowledge from the ground up—completing professional certifications, including programs through Meta and leading institutions in Brazil, and working directly with entrepreneurs who needed help growing their businesses.
"What started as a necessity soon became a passion," she says.
By 2019, she was ready for her next move. She immigrated to Canada, bringing with her an entrepreneurial mindset and a growing reputation as a marketing consultant and mentor.
Then the pandemic hit.
Businesses of all sizes were forced to rethink how they operated, communicated, and grew. Almost overnight, digital marketing shifted from a competitive advantage to a business essential. As entrepreneurs rushed to strengthen their online presence and adapt to a rapidly changing marketplace, demand for strategic marketing guidance surged.
Paim was there to help—and that moment became the foundation for her business: Hello You Agency.
What began as a consultancy evolved into a full-service marketing agency serving clients across Canada, Brazil, and beyond. At its core, the agency exists to champion entrepreneurs—women entrepreneurs, in particular—helping them grow their visibility and build brands that reflect who they actually are.
"I met many talented women who were exceptional at what they did but struggled to communicate their value, position themselves confidently, and market their businesses effectively," Paim explains. "I wanted to create a company that could help bridge that gap."
Today, Hello You Agency primarily works with women entrepreneurs while also creating opportunities for women professionals within its own team—a reflection of Paim's belief that when women succeed in business, the impact extends far beyond individual companies.
In 2026, that commitment was recognized with the Canadian Choice Award for Best Marketing Agency in Hamilton, Ontario.
The Decision to Go Deeper
As Hello You Agency matured, so did the questions Paim asked herself.
She spent years mastering the execution of marketing. Now she wanted to understand how marketing connected to broader business outcomes—from customer behavior and long-term strategy to data-driven decision-making. More importantly, she wanted the recommendations she made for her clients, team, and company to be grounded in more than intuition and experience.
"I wanted to ensure that those decisions were supported by solid business principles rather than trends or assumptions," she says.
While researching executive education options, she discovered HBS Online's Digital Marketing Strategy course. Harvard had long felt aspirational but out of reach. She assumed it was accessible only through a traditional on-campus experience. The online format changed that.
"What immediately attracted me was the reputation and credibility of Harvard Business School," Paim says. "I was looking for a program that would challenge me intellectually, without being superficial, while still fitting into the reality of my life as a business owner, mother, and immigrant building a company in a new country."
The flexibility made it possible. The rigor made it compelling. "I didn't think twice," she recalls.
A Different Kind of Learning Experience
Beginning the program with years of professional experience, Paim expected to encounter familiar concepts through a sharper lens. What she didn't anticipate was that the experience would fundamentally reshape how she approached problem-solving.
"Many of the courses I had taken throughout my career were centered around a specific expert, methodology, or point of view," she explains. "HBS Online was different. Rather than teaching a single way of thinking, the program encouraged me to build my own perspective."
The emphasis wasn't on memorizing answers. It was on developing a new approach to analysis, through case studies, discussions, and real-world business problems shared by professionals from different industries, countries, and backgrounds.
"I was exposed to perspectives I would never have encountered otherwise," she says. "I developed a richer way of thinking by listening, debating, reflecting, and learning from people with different experiences and perspectives from around the world."
For someone who entered marketing through entrepreneurship rather than a traditional business education, that proved particularly valuable. The program didn't simply add new knowledge. It changed how she processed the knowledge she already had.
Strategy In Action
The impact showed up quickly in her client work.
While earning her HBS Online certificate, Paim was working with a client whose business had grown steadily for two years. Results were good, the relationship was strong, and they appeared to be on the right track. But the program had sharpened her eye for something harder to quantify: whether a brand was genuinely differentiated, or simply performing well within a crowded space.
"One of the key lessons for me was that sustainable growth doesn't come from simply following market trends," Paim explains. "It comes from understanding what makes a brand unique and building a strategy around that."
She and her team stepped back, reassessed the client's brand positioning, and rebuilt the digital marketing strategy around what made the brand distinct: the client's specific expertise, views, and voice. Within a few months, the client's audience grew fivefold, and the brand became far more recognizable within its niche.
"Sometimes growth isn't about doing more marketing," Paim reflects. "It's about making more intentional strategic decisions that help a business stand out and create long-term value."
The same thinking began reshaping how Hello You Agency operated. Since completing an HBS Online course and attending HBS Online’s annual learner conference, Connext, Paim noticed a meaningful shift in how clients, partners, and prospects engaged with her and the agency.
"The conversations I was having became different," she says. "There was a greater level of trust, respect, and recognition for the work we do."
The Thread That Was Always There
Looking back, Paim sees a career shaped not by accidents but by a consistent underlying drive—a desire to understand how things work and help others grow.
"As an entrepreneur, it's easy to get caught up in solving problems quickly and making decisions based on experience alone," she reflects. "The program challenged me to slow down, analyze different perspectives, question assumptions, and think more strategically about the long-term impact of decisions.”
HBS Online gave her a formal vocabulary for what she had been doing intuitively—and the frameworks to apply it more deliberately.
The result is a version of Hello You Agency that operates less like a marketing vendor and more like a strategic partner: one that asks harder questions about positioning, differentiation, and where a brand needs to be in three years, not just next quarter.
"Perhaps the biggest impact has been realizing that investing in my own development directly impacts the growth of my business," Paim says. "As I grow, my company grows with me."
And if the path to that realization led through physiotherapy school, a global pandemic, an international move, and ultimately, to an HBS Online course she once believed was beyond her reach, perhaps the longer road was the right one all along.
