Business leaders are faced with countless questions that can be solved using data: Should you invest in a new product? Is your employee incentive program working? Are your sales projections accurate? Using bad or incomplete data can lead you in the wrong direction. Data Science for Business will teach you how to think beyond the spreadsheet and effectively use data to tackle business decisions—making you a stronger individual contributor and manager.

“Strong business strategies focus on clearly defined objectives and measurable results, which is why managers need to develop the competencies and employ data-oriented practices into their organizations,” says Data Science for Business instructor Yael Grushka-Cockayne, a visiting professor at Harvard Business School. “Many managers lack data science skills, which leaves them at a disadvantage, so they must close that gap in order to best present credible information and gain stakeholder buy-in.”

Data Science for Business is for managers and individual contributors who want to use data to improve their decision-making abilities and how they communicate those decisions to others. Delivered via the HBS Online course platform, it brings concepts to life using real-world examples, while prompting you to think critically about how to apply those lessons in your own workplace.

By putting technical applications into practice, learners will expand their data literacy. The course will allow business leaders to:

  • Move beyond Excel and gain a foundational understanding of data science tactics, including data curation, regression models, the basics of coding environments, such as R, and visualization platforms
  • Recognize and solve business challenges in their own organization by using data science
  • Apply their learning through analyzing case studies and interpreting datasets
