With the alternative investments industry expected to reach $14 trillion in assets under management by 2023, Harvard Business School Online is launching a new course to help early-career professionals gain a competitive edge and advance their careers.
Alternative Investments, led by Victoria Ivashina, the Lovett-Learned Chaired Professor of Finance at Harvard Business School, will teach participants how to evaluate and when to incorporate less conventional asset classes to diversify portfolios and maximize value. The course covers private equity, private debt, hedge funds, and real estate.
View Video“Basic finance teaches how incredibly hard it is to beat the public market consistently, yet there is this booming industry that claims to do just that,” Professor Ivashina says. “This online course is essentially a modern textbook on Alternative Investments, delivered in a dynamic and engaging format, that will teach you how to leverage this large and fast-growing investment segment in a responsible and informed way.”
In the course, participants will learn how to:
- Understand the landscape of alternative investments
- Speak the language of alternative investments to better communicate and collaborate with colleagues and customers
- Evaluate alternative investments—including private equity (venture capital, growth equity, and buyouts), private debt, hedge funds, and real estate—and identify their defining elements, such as size, risk, and liquidity
- Analyze and discuss with fellow professionals from around the world about how to balance alternatives with traditional asset classes
- Learn from experts and practitioners in the field, including the former chief investment officer from Citigroup Asset Management and the chief investment officer at The Children’s Investment Fund
- Gain the skills and confidence for career advancement in financial services
Joining Professor Ivashina in teaching this course are Harvard Business School’s Randolph Cohen, Senior Lecturer of Business Administration, and Arthur Segel, Baker Foundation Professor of Management Practice.
